Mr. Coronel had been a Mexican soldier and had settled in the Los Angeles area to work as a schoolteacher. It was Mr. Coronel who gave La Canada its name, meaning "a glen between mountain ranges." As more people settled the area, agriculture blossomed. Barley, grapes, and fruit trees were planted and many early settlers raised bees and sold their honey in Los Angeles. Around 1910, the area began to change from a ranching area into a suburban center. In the 1930's, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory began as a little test station, and as it grew, it offered jobs to more people. In 1976, the residents of La Canada voted to become a city, and the rest, as they say, is history. The population today stands at 20,318.
